2013 Chicago Cycle Laws

Thanks to LocalMotoHub for sharing these We already knew that motorcyclist will be allowed to proceed through a red light after waiting a reasonable time for the light to change, but here are a few others you may have missed:

  • Look, Ma, No Hands!! The handlebar grips of a motorcycle may not be higher than the height of the operator’s head and the operator must keep at least one hand on a handlebar grip at all times while the motorcycle is in motion.
  • No More Wheelies - Operating a motorcycle on one wheel while speeding constitutes an aggravated offense, with a minimum fine of $100 for the first offense and up to $1,000 for repeat offenses.
  • This makes good safety sense - Motorcycles may be equipped with red or amber stop lights on the rear of the vehicle that flash and become steady on when the brake is applied. Good to know!
